I absolutely love this episode. It's one of my favorites, especially just to watch one off without watching a whole arc. I just love the look at the racism in the Clave and the Shadowhunters universe in general, the lore that comes with that, and I honestly enjoy the fact that it's pretty self contained (though I agree it would be a sick like, half season concept). Izzy telling Jace about her addiction <3. I'm so proud of her :). I also like his reaction - he's shocked, but supportive, and not overly protective. I also like that she said "not perfect, but better". Her training Max!! It's going to be fun to see :). And honestly Max was pretty good managing to track them this episode lol, even if he nearly got himself killed. Glad they're all okay <3 (and that it wasn't Meliorn). It's also nice to see her and Raphael working together again :). Simon is really going through it this episode xd. It'll be interesting to see what comes of the daylighter stuff 👀, and I'm glad he's okay after everything else. We love that he wanted to stay by Clary <3. Also his conversation with Luke is so funny XDD. Crazy lol. That was a wild song you graced us with by the way xD perfect. Anyway, I'll talk more about it in a moment, but I agree, Simon's completely valid for not wanting that DNA test <3. And I'm glad Clary was with him on it immediately. Speaking of Clary, she was also kinda going through it xD. I'm glad she was okay after the attack, and thank goodness she was around to knock some sense into Jace lol. Also I just love that Alec was sitting by her bedside :). They don't always get along but they have a really sweet friendship <3. Also, Clary booking the gig for Simon is so cute :D. And he ate that up, too, I really like that song. Maia is an icon. That's just a fact, she's amazing. And she will not hesitate to call the shadowhunters out on their bullcrap (like "I knew I could be stopped by the police just for being black, but I thought the Clave was supposed to be more advanced than that" - something like that). Also, with the fight scene, I'm glad Luke said what he said. He loves Clary, but she's not the one being chipped right now. The Shadowhunters were right to be nervous, but they were in the wrong (looking at you lady, can't remember her name but yk Herondale lady). And I agree with what Maia said about Jace - he definitely seems kind of adrift in this episode. I think he wants to hold on so tight to family, which he's still reeling from getting, that he just decides to follow her. Plus, he doesn't have a specific Downworlder he's close with to slap him in the face (figuratively) with what's happening lol. But I am glad he eventually did the right thing <3. And him and Maia o.o. Not a surprise necessarily, but at that moment lol. Anyway, interesting to be sure 👀. The more we go through the episode the more Magnus's reaction makes sense. I believe I mentioned this a long time ago, referencing episode 4, but we've seen a Circle member directly taunt Magnus about taking his eyes after killing him. That's insane xd. Warlocks are few and far between because a) they're rare (a demon and a human have a baby), and b) they were hunted. Plus, Magnus is still dealing with what happened to him last episode. Notice how he was dressed up today, which Alec even commented on - just keep it in mind 👀. Anyway, I think it makes sense that he gave Alec the hair, but was still pretty upset about it. We love Alec resisting Herondale Lady the whole episode though, especially at the chips bit. And YESS, I'm so glad Shadowhunters doesn't just go for the cheap drama of having Magnus cheat on Alec. It's not even just "he doesn't, he decides not to", it's "he pushes her away and bluntly says that he is in love with Alec. I just love that <3. Anyway, even though on the surface it wasn't much, I'm glad Alec apologized for not trusting Magnus <3. Just happy they're okay :). Now, about the Clave and a bit more of the social tension here. First of all, this another one of the few confirmations that the Clave is not just racist, but homophobic lol. When Jace says Alec should've gotten the job of Head of The Institute, Alec says "The Clave was never gonna hand it to me. I'm dating a guy who's a Downworlder." Which just. AUGH!! It's awful, but I also love that moment because they rarely actually acknowledge it (the gay side of it, that is), and it deserves to be. Anyway, onto the racism side of things for the episode as a whole xd (this might be a really long comment, I just love this episode). Luke used to be a Shadowhunter, and he is a police officer, so it makes sense that he's willing to be DNA tested. Simon's reason, his Jewish heritage, also makes sense. For Raphael, it's that the vampires vowed to never take trophies after Downworlders were hunted for sport. Makes sense, but is also an interesting layer we didn't know before (Simon's is as well, but this is about all the vampires so it's a bit bigger scale). Anyway, the trophies thing would be a reason he wouldn't want to be tested, but it's also a reason the vampires don't need to be. Magnus did it because Alec asked, and to be cleared, but he was clearly not at all happy about it. Based on what we hear throughout the episode (because he doesn't give his reason in the initial conversation like the others), it's because: it makes it seem like Alec doesn't trust him; the trophies/hunting are something he doesn't want to relive; and just other human events he's witnessed as an immortal. Again, they all make sense. Dot's reasons seem to be similar (I believe she references the Salem Witch Trials?). We don't see Maia being asked about DNA, but we do know she doesn't agree with the chips (for good reason). Also, as a more recent member of the Shadow World/Downworld, she's impacted by her experiences as a Mundane in the human world - racism because she's black. Now, I know I just recapped what we already know, but stick with me xD. It makes sense to me that Izzy didn't know about the trophies. Or if she did, it was a vague thing from "the past" that they didn't do anymore. But for a lot of the Downworlders, it's something they remember. In the first episode of the show, when Circle members are in Magnus's club and say he should let the past go (read: forget about the Circle being awful bigots), he says "To me, it was yesterday" (or something like that). This is something the older Downworlders experienced, lost friends to. And even if they didn't, it was probably passed down as a warning. And hey - America doesn't always like to teach about its crimes, so you can understand the Clave not doing so. Now, Kaylee (if that's how you spell it lol, I don't remember) is really strategic, like you said. She knows what will make the Clave jump on the Downworlders, and that that will make them jump back (rightfully so). She wants a war, and she honestly could've gotten one. The most dangerous thing about how the Clave acts in this episode is that on the surface, it makes sense. "We can track Shadowhunters, we should be able to track them as well. It's not anything extra, it's making everyone even." Except that tracking them requires involuntarily chipping them like animals. And while the Clave is technically in charge, what with the accords and whatnot, a lot of the Downworlders have internal governments (the Warlocks have High Warlocks, and I believe a council/voting type thing, but it's not made too clear; the Vampires have Clan leaders; the Seelie have a queen; and Werewolves have Alphas) and are often left to their own devices. Anyway, The Clave is doing things that could be perceived as good or right, but really aren't when you look at them. It's just so fascinating in a world building way, and it's a pretty good look at real life as well. And we've seen the racism of the Clave before. Not liking that Alec's dating Magnus, kicking Downworlders out of the Institute, and something else that I think has been mentioned but I'm not sure so I won't right now (it's not super important or anything). It just comes into focus this episode, and I'm glad they didn't brush past it. Also, I love that the Downworlders stood together on this. Simon singing for the Downworld at the end is a good example of it, too - they're all just there, enjoying the music, brought together by this shared experience. Also, I'm so glad the Shadowhunters listened to their Downworlder loved ones (even if it took a while lol) and stood by them. Anyway, it's interesting to see how all this progresses throughout the rest of the show. That got super long, and I'm sure there's things I forgot (if I remember I might come back), but yeah xD. I just really enjoy this episode ❤️. I'm glad everybody ended up okay in the end though :). Also, Valentine is still in jail, that's just what all their jail cells look like (and using the same set was probably cheaper lol). Love your reactions!! Excited for the next episode :).

Maya and Jace: why does there need to be a reason. Jace is the self-proclaimed heart-throb of the show. Maya, as you well recognise, is hella fine. Those are teenagers we are talking about. Of course they'd want to bang 😂 especially since they been bickering for 3 episodes and neither of them relented - some of us find that hot 😅

I feel like Magnus reaction was because this is the second time Alec didn't trust him since Alec didn't believe him. Same like when he tried to tell him he was in Valentine's body 🤷🏿‍♀️

I think that the shadow hunters not knowing about the sports thing does make sense cause if you’re supposed to have complete and utter faith in the shadow hunter law why tell them the bad history, just like in Florida, why learn about slavery when you committed it 🤷🏽‍♀️

Simon and Izzy are playing dangerous games xd. It's cute to see them hanging out together though! They're really sweet as friends, and I love that Izzy was ready to help him out :). Glad she's doing okay, too <3. But also, I'm glad they showed it's not totally over and done with. That's not how addiction works. They show how she reacts to the vampire offering to bite her, and it makes sense. I love that she's going to meetings though :)! And poor Simon too xd. Clary just be honest with him lol - and I agree, there's a lot better ways she could've phrased it. Also, I will say, Raphael has a right to be angry after what they did, and it makes sense to be jealous of Simon, but you got to let it go man xd. Congrats on having a biological family Jace 🥳🥳!! A grandma ain't nothing :D. And lol, now he gets to be Jace 5 last names! Wayland, Lightwood, Fairchild (kinda), Morgenstern, and Herondale xD! Poor guy's been going through it lol. And then he gets held captive by his ex dad xD. GG to Clary and Simon! I'm glad they're doing well despite the Jace stuff :). Also, Sebastian asking her out and getting rejected xd. Oof man, lol. I'm glad she was easy going but very blunt about it and wasn't like "oh I'm just not interested". Anyway, interesting to have him around 👀. And of course! He brought Clary's rune drawing ability back o.o. It's a wild scene just watching him rip into her LOL (and I love seeing Alec defend her a bit :) ), but he did get them back! Nice job :D. And it's interesting that that's what was causing it - she was blocking off her emotions because of the pain of losing Jace as her brother, someone that meant she wasn't alone, which is an interesting angle! Especially when you expect it just to be her being in love with him again lol. And I like what you said about Jace getting family while she loses it! I hadn't really registered the parallel there, and it's certainly interesting. Anyway, thanks Sebastian lol! And you mentioning him dealing with his yin fen urges with the fire - interesting 👀. Yayy, hi Luke for two seconds lol. I so feel your pain with Alec xd. I love this episode for the Magnus angst but I rarely watch it because Alec not realizing kills me. Side note, I find it kinda funny that you didn't notice for a minute there lol. I got suspicious after the end of the last episode when I watched it, but I was more scared of a body switch than absolutely sure xd. This episode just confirmed it. Still, I think it's a pretty good twist!! Anyway, I think a big part of Alec not rescuing Magnus earlier is him talking to Jace. Jace is so used to being tricked by Valentine so he basically doesn't even consider it. And Alec doesn't want it to be true! He wants to trust Jace, and he's seen how much pain Valentine causes. Also, I think most people haven't heard of body switching being a real thing. Still, I know the seed of doubt was in his head, and I'm glad he immediately ran back when Jace told him what was going on. Poor Alec though :(. This must've been rough. Your face during the scene where they're torturing Magnus is just so real :(((. It's really sad to watch xd, especially the flashes of Magnus in there. And, also, if you'll notice, a child 👀. Interesting. And of course, almost nothing's more heartbreaking than someone calling out for their mom :'(. Anyway, Magnus is absolutely going through it in this episode 😭. From the torture to the thinking he'll die (and almost being executed!) to the emotional torment of not being recognized by anyone he loved (specifically his boyfriend). Gotta say quickly that Harry Shum Jr's (Magnus) and Alan van Sprang's (Valentine) acting is SO GOOD this episode!!!! It always is of course, but even though I hate body switching (because of second hand embarrassment xd), I love it as well for the acting. Seeing two actors know each other and each other's characters so well is SUPER cool. And this is a really emotional episode for both characters too. UGH, just so good <33. Anyway, Alec is an ICON for killing Azazel just like that. It does feel a bit anticlimactic, but I'll get over it for that cool shot lol, and Alec doing something that was supposed to be super difficult easily. Also, I'm so glad you find Valentine-in-Magnus's-body's expressions as funny as I do xD. Imagine if you will: Alec, a Lightwood, cradling his (Downworlder), boyfriend's face: Are you okay? Valentine, biggest bigot ever: what the fu- IT'S JUST SO HILARIOUS TO ME SKFHDKS. Anyway, I was dying at your rants during this episode, like about the morning breath lol. AND SAYING ALEC KILLED CLARY'S MOM AND THEN MADE OUT WITH HER DAD O.O XDD. Honestly that's so hilarious I almost wish they did kiss, and to see Valentine's reaction, but I am still glad they didn't xD. I will say that while I love this episode, it's definitely kind of a transition episode with a lot of character moments. The main story doesn't have a lot going on, it just still feels like we're in the aftermath of Season 2A. But we get character moments and stuff setting up for the rest of the season - how will this affect Magnus going forward? How will Jace's newfound family affect him? Will Sebastian keep hanging around? What will happen now that other vampires have seen Simon in the daylight, but he's still feuding with Raphael? And of course, they're finally done interrogating Valentine at the Institute, so what will that bring? The next episode is another one of my favorites (like 2x08) to rewatch just one off, and honestly just favorites in general. Love your reactions!! I'm SO excited for the next episode :))!

we came for the story, we stayed for the drama (and Malec, obviously). stop focusing so much on the story - this is not a particularly strong series story-wise. just enjoy the teenage drama ^^

Add on: and yes. I feel the same, Alec should have just KNOWN which one was Magnus. I think I put it down to him being talked out of his instincts by Jace. If he hadn’t talked to him, then I think Alec would have figured it out, but the point of the parabatai bond is to trust your parabatai when you feel you can’t trust yourself, so I can see how Alec was swayed from trusting his instincts about Magnus.

It’s kinda hilarious to me how long it took you to catch the switch… I mean the fans were ON IT when this aired. Like, there’s no way Magnus would say “disgusting warlock” 😂😂

What kills me is all the fancy tech they have in the NY institute and no one can do a damn DNA test? Someone spare Jace some therapy hours and swab is cheek before you change his last name again.

Yes Azazel will regenerate in his own realm (it will take some time), but he won't be able to return without being summoned. It's pretty much the same for all greater demons, so come to "our" dimension, they have to be summoned. I would have loved for Alec to have been the one to realise about Magnus, and he did try and talk to Jace about it. But so many lies and manipulations have come from Valentines mouth, that it is feasible to believe that this may be another trap. Poor Magnus 😢

Izzy's shadowhunter rune - it is interesting to know whether they can have the same rune twice. if so, I can very well imagine that Izzy did it as a tattoo on her chest because she identified with being a shadowhunter so much. the first (and real) rune is somewhere on her arm, as is for everyone else.

dude, no woman would leave the house if her makeup was not properly on (if she put makeup on, of course, not saying everyone wears makeup). Izzy probably spent an hour putting it on and cleaning it until it looked proper. she needed to fool Rafael that she was all right, and messy makeup wouldn't fool anyone ^^

Context: Mea maxima culpa is a Catholic thing and means something like "through my most grievous fault". Mea maxima culpa is traditionally used in a prayer of confession in the Catholic Church as the third and most emphatic expression of guilt (“mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa”). Unlike mea culpa, mea maxima culpa is rarely used outside of a religious context. In this episode, I think it is meant to symbolize Jace's guilt at touching the soul sword and killing all these downworlders.

This episode is SO!! GOOD!!! The twists and turns and the action and the emotional moments are all just amazing!! Good on Izzy for not taking the secrecy from Raphael. Hopefully not being around him means she can overcome the addiction easier, but they are cute. Also, yes!! So glad you commented on the interesting turn that is an ace vampire - it's something you wouldn't expect and I love that representation :). Anyway, glad Raphael is okay <3. And Izzy slayed that fight on the roof!! I'm glad Maia set stuff aside and decided to help, even if it ended badly. Luke is protective of Clary but I really so think he usually has everyone's best interests at heart. And thank goodness they and Meliorn were waylaid and therefore didn't go in. That's what saved them xd. The questions regarding Jace's name and parentage will be answered. If it's still confusing (it is) when it's explained I'll try and lay it all out, but just rest assured it's not inconsistencies. Speaking of, I didn't pick up on the alternate universe thing myself! I've seen several reactors mention it but it just slipped my mind entirely lol. Glad you remembered (I know you mentioned it at the time)! But anyway, it seriously is crazy 😬😳. And poor Jace, man xd. Every time he thinks his life kind of makes sense it's upended again. Valentine playing them was honestly so good o.o. It shows us how he's stayed alive and on top so long, while still showing the skills and willingness to sacrifice of the heroes. Also the switch up of Jace glamored as Clary was amazing!! It's just a really awesome episode overall in that department, with twists and such lol. Simon can walk in the daylight o.o. Interesting. Him standing there basking in the sun, especially directly after he was going around mourning the dead, is so powerful and just a great moment <3. And congrats Simon!! Glad he's okay, and now he can walk in the sun!! Oof for Jace with him and Clary though o.o. Magnus with Madzie is so cute :')). I'm glad she's out of evil hands now, poor girl just wants to live her life xd. Also her trusting Magnus because he shows her he's a warlock is so sweet. Anyway, I love the Clary Magnus content this episode!! Their conversation in the park is great :'). Alec having to team up with Aldertree and being absolutely done the whole time is the best xD. But it does show us that Aldertree's probably not actually evil, he just sucks xd. Glad he got/had to see what happened to Izzy with this all though 😤. Also the story he tells about the woman he loved is a shock o.o, but I'm glad Alec didn't listen to his sentiment :'). And: AAAHHHHH THE MALEC I LOVE YOU'S :DDDD!! It's such a beautiful moment. I like what you said about their whole tension leading into this situation. It happened because there were things going on out of both of their knowledge and control, but Alec needed somewhere to direct his anger and fear. Even if he shouldn't have done it the way that he did, at least Magnus was a safe space for him to do that and not be punished. Completely understandable that Alec realized he was being unreasonable and that Magnus wasn't mad <33. And Alec deciding to confess despite but Aldertree said :'). Or maybe specifically to spite him lol (not that that's his only reason). Screw Aldertree <3. Anyway, Magnus being shocked but saying it back, and then the KISS, and that HUG gosh Alec just holding him 😭❤️. Them holding each other honestly!! And if I may be angsty and sad for a moment - Alec thought he was dead. His reaction in thst scene absolutely kills me, I love it, because it's so good. You can see the moment it registers, and it's all he can think about. That Magnus could've been in the building, and then finding out he was and no one has seen him since. For clarification regarding checking faces, the blast was contained within the walls of the institute, but they're basically guessing it would've killed any Downworlder in the building (though they were all in the one room). So thinking about that: Alec searched all night. He searched for the rest of the night into the morning, probably hours, given that during the fight with Valentine it's still pitch black outside. Slowly losing hope, growing more and more scared because he can't lose Magnus, and what if Alec yelling at him is the last thing he'll have ever said to him. Scared that Magnus had died without knowing that Alec loves him. And then the relief when finally, finally, when he's just standing feeling hopeless, Magnus is there. AOUAGH it kills me every time <3. And don't forget Magnus must've been stressing about Alec that whole time too, if not as definitively (since he hadn't heard anything, while Alec had seen bad news). They love each other so much and I love them <3. Anyway!! Analysing of Malec time over lol. This episode so so good, such a good mid season finale. Once again, thank you for really diving in, to the characters and the show and everything. And you still have fun and make jokes that are so real lol! It's a great combination. Love your reactions!! I'm so excited for the next episode, and the second half of season 2 in general :D :))!
